Oct 2007-COUNTY CHIEF'S
PAY-OUT AS STAFF FACE WAGE CUTS
County council's chief executive is to retire early. Mr Latham 57
earns about £150,000 and would receive a lump sum payment in
the region of £140,000 on retirement. He would also be entitled
to an annual pension of about £46,000 a year.
POST COMMENT (Oct 30th 2007)
We would rather local authorities did not saddle themselves with the
sort of commitment that will now see the council paying a six-figure
sum into the pension fund to cover its and Mr Latham's contributions
until 2010, while simultaneously employing a new chief executive and
contributing to his or her pension.
That demands attention. But you cannot blame Mr Latham for claiming
an entitlement
COUNTY IS ROBBING PETER TO PAY PAUL (Letters Post Oct 30th 2007)
-----Perhaps the county council should be more inward looking and
ask whether so many layers of local government are required, whether
there are too many management levels, whether savings could be made
on councillor costs and what efficiencies can be achieved throughout
the council

Money for Care of the elderly should be ring-fenced to prevent the
"Robbing of Peter to pay Paul".
